United Paws fills gap
As printed in the Tillamook Headlight Herald on Dec 8, 2009:
I'd like to thank Headlight Herald columnist Susan Rathbun for alerting her readers to the very real link between domestic violence and animal welfare.
My recent experience in rescuing three cats from a victim of domestic violence is a case in point. I was asked, on short notice, to help relocate a woman's cats before her abuser was released from jail. He had threatened to kill the cats.
But my greatest concern was that the woman was risking her own safety by returning home to care for her animals.
I must give credit where credit is due - United Paws volunteers assisted me in the rescue, offering advice, support, advertising on their Web site, space at the Adopt-A-Thon, and veterinary expenses for spaying, shots and worming the cats. Another new volunteer stepped forward to "foster" two of the kitties.
United Paws does a great job of filling the gap in Tillamook County, where the deficiency of our official Animal Shelter often leads to abandoned pets.
Thanks to its volunteers, this story ends happily. All three cats are now adopted into safe and loving homes.
United Paws is a grassroots organization dependent on local volunteers, animal "foster care" givers, and your donations. Send contributions to United Paws, PO 159, Tillamook, OR 97141.
